Bobby was the groups youngest member and the biggest clown as well and he always questioned his role within the group, deeming them not as valuable as those of his teammates. But time and time again he proved his worth. After being captured by the island being Krakoa, and being rescued by new recruits to the X-Men, Bobby left the group. He went on to try to live a "human" live by studying to become an accountant, but eventually missed his old life too much and joined Warren's (Angel's) Champions of Los Angeles. When they were disbanded he joined the Defenders along with the Incredible Hulk, Prince Namor, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Angel and Beast. This group disbanded when many were thought to have died in a battle.
He then went
on to join his former original X-Men teammates in the formation of X-Factor.
An encounter with another being resulted
in Bobby's powers increasing to the point where he was forced to where
a special belt for control. In time he was able to control his increased
powers without the use of his belt. X-Factor then returned to the
X-Men and had an encounter with Colossus' brother that demonstrated Bobby's
potential mutant abilities, he then spent time trying to learn more about
himself, but it wasn't until the White Queen (Emma Frost) mentally possessed
Bobby did he realize what he was capable of. He was then able to
transform his body fully into solid ice.
Despite believing
he had never been an important member of the X-Men, he was captured by
Apocalypse for the group of 12 (mutants who would change the history of
the world), and survived when Cyclops sacrificed his own life for the others
and to prevent Apocalypse from reaching his goal.
