Throngs of Harriers Return to Bear Mountain for 25th Alumni XC Run

Gunther, Littmann take 7th titles; Somers, Monroe-Woodbury teams win

By Jamie Kempton

Close to 300 harriers jogged memories of races past as they converged on Bear Mountain – the ancestral home of the local cross-country brigade – for the 25th running of the Rockland Alumni/Bill Markiewicz Memorial Cross Country Run on Nov. 24.

The sun shone on the plains and hills of Bear Mountain as crystal-clear, high-30-degree temperatures greeted the 283 participants and hordes of onlookers for the silver anniversary event. The reunion-like extravaganza attracted runners from all parts of the country and spanned 53 years of alumni graduation – 1954 to 2007.

A couple of familiar figures emerged from the pack to reassert their dominance on the 3-mile course, highlighted as always by the steep ski-slope hill midway through the race. Art Gunther, Tappan Zee class of 1989, annexed his record seventh individual championship. Gunther led Bert Rodriguez, Nyack ’97, around Hessian Lake and up the ski-jump incline before pulling away on the Parade Grounds flats near the Inn. Gunther, a Binghamton University Hall of Famer, clocked 15 minutes, 26 seconds for a 40-yard victory over Rodriguez, who ran a personal-best 15:34.

Seven was also the lucky number for Julianne Littmann-Viscardo, a 1995 Monroe-Woodbury grad and former Clemson University standout. She breezed to her seventh title overall and fifth in succession, both meet records. Littmann-Viscardo has rarely been challenged during her winning skein and this year was no exception as she clocked 19:01 to prevail by more than a minute over runner-up Laura (Bergen) DiMarino, Nanuet ’84 (20:10).

For only the second time in race history, a non-Rockland squad captured the men’s team title. Somers of Westchester County placed three runners in the top seven en route to a 52-point victory total. The youthful Tusker alums were spearheaded by Doug Swiatocha ’06 in fourth (16:15), Niko Viglione ’05 in fifth (16:17) and Josh Kneer ’06 in seventh (16:23). Somers dethroned Clarkstown North, the six-time defending champion, which compiled 96 points. Mike Morris ’96 led the Rams in ninth place (16:29).

Monroe-Woodbury is the only other non-Rockland team to claim a men’s crown, having won in 1988. Clarkstown North and Albertus Magnus are the all-time leaders in men’s team titles with eight apiece.

In the women’s division, the Monroe-Woodbury alums shaded North Rockland, 51 to 64, to procure their fifth championship, tied with Nanuet for second-highest in race annals behind Pearl River’s six. Littmann-Viscardo was supported by Crusader alumnae teammates Suzanne LaBurt ’81, fifth in 20:39, and Joanne Smith ’05, eighth in 21:06. Brianne Scott ’02 paced the North Rockland grads with a third-place effort in 20:20.

The annual Bill Markiewicz Award was presented to Kevin Stewart, Albertus Magnus class of 1974. Stewart was a thrower for Albertus and later coached the Falcon girls to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including a Section 1 title. For more than two decades he has been a dedicated and hard-working volunteer for Section 1 track and cross country, the Empire State Games and the Alumni Run. He also is treasurer of the Rockland County Track & Field Hall of Fame.

The award and the event are named in honor of Bill Markiewicz, the well-respected former cross country and track coach at Clarkstown North High School who died of cancer in 1991. As always, several members of the Markiewicz family participated in the race and Bill’s widow, Janet, made the award presentation as the runners were assembled on the starting line.

Three entrants kept their impressive streaks alive by participating in the Alumni Run for the 25th consecutive year: Pat Chambers, Albertus Magnus ’76, who won the inaugural race in 1983; Larry Beckerle, Albertus Magnus ’73; and Walt Johnston, Suffern ’65.

The finishers’ total of 283 ranks second in race history, behind only the 334 runners who turned out for the 10th anniversary event in 1992. Likewise, the women’s total of 72 finishers ranks No. 2, second only to the 74 who took part in 2004.
