CID
home telephone

my home telephone no.2557757 comes under the medical college exchange of the thiruvananthapuram telecom of the telephone company BSNL.

the telephone company provides a facility where by one can identify the caller and decide whether to answer the call or not. the machine with this facility is supposed to display the number of the calling party.

now i am supposed to be having this facility on my machine and here are pictures of some of the numbers displayed as that of the calling party on my telephone.

DIALUP INTERNET

i had or rather have problems connecting to the internet from my home. in fact my dial up connection is being blocked completely.
i would have loved to have and was desperately trying for expert help. but none came by and so i am back to my own resources there as well.

i have more than one dial up internet connections with various ISPs and i have to use my home telephone to connect to the ISPs. initially i was able to get through. now a days what happens is that i am told that i have been connected to the net but am not allowed to do anything on the net with the connection freezing at 650 bytes or so. all that happens is my telephone meter ticking away! ultimately i had to give up using the net for almost two years in spite of my having more than one computers at home as well as a "telephone" connection kind courtesy BSNL trivandrum! i made complaints but they denied any interference and was always blaming my machine and me.

recenty i have taken an account with a cable company that uses their own cable and i could use the net again. so the problem was not with my computer or with me as was being made out earlier. and indeed after this kind courtesy one of the officials at the exchange i was able to get on to the net even with the dial up connection. but in no time it has reverted to the abnormal pattern

what is happening is that when i dial my ISP's dial up telephone number i am connected NOT to the ISP's computer but to a proxy server set up within the telephone setup which takes over charge of my computer. it depends on the whims of the police man sitting at this proxy server what i am to be allowed to do on the net.

this is a completely illegal operation, but when it is being done from the server side what can one do? how can you prove it in a court of law? i am afraid there is no way unless some one in their establishment squeals ( and why should any one do that? what does he/she gain from me ?) so one has to grin and bear it.

all the same i have some suggestive evidence which i am giving below. i am not a computer professional. if there are fallacies in my argument please let me know.

now click on the link below and you will be taken to a screen shot of my desk top.

normally when one dials the ISP's telephone number, after the modem shake hand and password check either the connection is established and the icon goes and sits on the task bar.

or if the user name or password is wrong the connection is broken and a dialogue box directs the user to check user name and password as shown in this picture.

NIB

in the above picture the isp concerned is the telephone company's own sanchar net.
below is the link to a screen shot of the desk top on dialing up the number of another ISP, satyam infoway. when the password is wrong a new window pops up asking for the password! those who access the dial up network from india know that there is no such arrangement in the case of any reputed ISPs.

Satyam

now see the case of VSNL.

VSNL

same situation as satyam. for that matter this happens with any ISP other than that of sancharnet.

incidentally my account with md4 of vsnl has got more than 80 net hours out of a total of 100 hrs i have paid for unused. and the account is expiring in may, that is next month. reason is simple; i was not allowed to access the net.

what comes out of this and the other semblances of evidences which follow is that the hacker is some one who has complete freedom with the sancharnet server.
of course, i know it is not enough to get the hacker convicted in a court of law.

POST DIAL-UP TERMINAL SCREEN

click on the link below to see the picture of the normal post dial up terminal window that you get on dialing the isp satyam infoway's telephone number.

satyam

here is what i got on dialing the satyam infoway's number from my home telephone the first time i selected this option.

hacker

the above picture came up when suddenly i selected the option to bring up the terminal window after dialing.
the "police man" did not anticipate this and what i got on dialing the ISP satyam infoway's number with the above option on was the message from the hacker's machine. all reputed isps invariably have their own welcome messages and not the machine's default message. the real satyam infoways welcome message is seen in the previous picture.
also see that the post dial up terminal screen has already appeared and the window "dialing" is still present.

MODEM SHAKE-HAND

now listen to the modem shake hand

modem

does it signify or rather suggest anything?

CONCLUSION

what is given above are just a few samples only. of course, one can always make excuses that it is all due to mechanical problems and all; but it is not at all that. and it is not the line man or the sde in charge of external maintainance who is responsible.

i can assure you, this sort of gimmicks can be carried out only by some one who has administrative rights over the computer system in the telephone exchange.

in short this is a typical situation arising from throwing pearls before swine.
