I have existed for centuries
living in castles built of your fears
and from behind this mortal mask
I carry out this deadly task
in order to revive myself
I plunge into the stream of life
that drains into the scarlet seas
and hold the red wines of immortality

Mazoku

By: Xelloss, Priest of the Ages

Prologue-Weakness

Xelloss could hear their cries above his own. Lina and Gourry, and even Amelia, were screaming his name. Zelgadiss was there too, but he lay on the ground behind Xelloss, already beaten down by this new enemy. Xelloss screamed again as seering pain spread through his body. The enemy had come for them, Zelgadiss and himself, because they were servants of Zeras-sama. The others had nothing to do with any of this, but the enemy would most likely kill them too, once he was finished with his targets. Xelloss would not allow that to happen. He was a mazoku but he liked these humans; they were his friends. Besides, he knew Zelgadiss would never forgive him if he let the others die.

Xelloss' staff clattered to the ground as he fell to his knees. His body was burned, his muscles ached. He felt so human, vulnerable. L-sama! Why was this happening to him? If only he had not been so careless; the enemy would not have taken them by surprise. And if only he had trained Zelgadiss better instead of fooling around. He cursed at himself. This always happened. Every time it seemed he could have a happy life, something went wrong. The worst part of it was, he could find no one to blame but himself.

Amelia rushed to his side muttering a healing spell. The spell only caused him more unsavory pain. Gods! Had she forgotten what he is? He pushed her away as gently as he could, which wasn't very in his angered condition. He fell flat, dust rising up around him in great clouds. The dirt got in his eyes and they began to water. How very pathetic he must look, how very human. Normally, he would run away and save himself. But he hadn't been his normal self lately. He couldn't leave Zelgadiss, and he knew Zelgadiss wouldn't leave the others. So he was stuck, stuck here while he slowly healed himself.

He opened his eyes and looked up. Lina and Gourry rushed in front of him, blocking the enemy. Lina screamed something and Gourry did too, but the enemy just laughed. Xelloss couldn't hear what they were saying anymore but he could guess. Stupid humans! Did they want to die? Xelloss closed his eyes, cursing his weakness. Weakness? Wasn't that what started it all? Yes. Xelloss tried to open his eyes but they would not obey. Xelloss was trapped in the darkness which was himself, remembering his moments of weakness...
