United Federation of Planets


Great Seal of the United Federation of Planets Starfleet Headquarters on EarthThe United Federation of Planets is an interstellar organization devoted to mutual trade, cooperation, protection, and exploration. The Federation was founded in 2161 by Earth, Vulcan, Andor, and Tellar. As of 2375, the Federation had over 150 member worlds. Although the core Federation planets occupies an area of space about 250 light-years in diameter, its furthest outposts stretch out over 8,000 light-years. The Federation's rules are outlined in the Constitution of the United Federation of Planets, which protects individual rights. The Federation is governed by the Federation Council, which is comprised of representatives from each of the member worlds. The Council meets in the city of San Fransisco on Earth, while the Federation President's office is located in the city of Paris on that same planet.

Worlds may petition for membership in the Federation. The Council will send Federation observers to determine if the world meets the requirements for membership. Only worlds that have achieved interstellar propulsion, such as warp drive, may become members. Additionally, the planet's society must practice the principle of equality for all sentient beings.

Starfleet Commend EmblemThe Federation, through is exploratory and defensive service called Starfleet, constantly seeks out new civilizations. This has sometimes led to armed conflict, especially with cultures that do not share Federation ideals. The Federation has been at war with a number of political entities, such as the Klingon and Romulan Empires, the Cardassian Union, and most recently the Dominion.

Current members of the United Federation of Planets include: the Antosians, Arbazan, Arcadians, Ardanans, Arkenites, Benzites, Berengarians, Betazoids, Bolians, Bre'elans, Coridani, Corvanians, Deltans, Efrosians, Evora, Grazarites, Humans, Klaetrons, K'normians, Kobheerians, Lumerians, Napeans, Pentarans, Ramatans, Risians, Saurians, Tellarites, Trill, Tyrellians, Vulcans, and Zelans.
