The Ktarian civilization has been known to the Federation since at least the mid-2280s. Ktarians developed warp drive 300 years ago, at approximately the same time as Humans. The Ktarians have been largely neutral in galactic affairs, although a group advocating the Ktarian Expansion attempted to take over Starfleet in 2367 by using an addictive game.
Ktarians are physically distinct from Humans, although they are reproductively compatible. Ktarians are often characterized as "feline". However, they also have traditionally reptillian traits. Ktarian mammary glands are protected from the sharp teeth of infants by a layer of scales. They also have a row of sharp ridges running over the head.
Several Ktarian foods are popular with other cultures, including Ktarian eggs and chocolate puffs. The Ktarian homeworld, sometimes referred to as Katarus, has glaciers that are renowed as skiing areas. An interesting Ktarian custom is the placement of thousands of sacred stones, representing prayers, on tombs. Removal of these stones is considered a desecration of the tomb.
