This is an index of all known cultures in the Milky Way galaxy. To be included in the index, a culture must be distinct enough to be easily recognized. Certain cultures consist of biologically related species like the Vulcans and Romulans, which have been separated long enough to diverge culturally.
Cultures are listed by:

This system is a tool for evaluating a culture's interaction in a spacefaring context based on technology, organization and mobility (which is particualrly important in the context of spacefaring civilizations). This system is not designed to judge cultures' "value" or rate them hierarchically. Because the system is based on "ideal types," some cultures may deviate from the exact specifications of the classes.
CLASS | TECHNOLOGY | ORGANIZATION | MOBILITY | EXAMPLE
1 | Primitive | Hand-made tools constructed from naturally occuring materials; no complex machines | Local; small kinship-based groups | Land travel; intracontinental; | Hanonians |
2 | Pre-industrial | Simple machines made from complex materials, powered by hand, environment or animals | National; relatively small settlements; some crosscultural interaction | Ocean travel; intercontinental | Barkons |
3 | Industrial | Electrically and chemically powered machines; mass production | International; some urbanzation and crosscultural interaction | Air travel; global | Edo |
4 | Pre-Warp | Widespread computerization and communication technology | Global; high urbanization and crosscultural interaction | Rudimentary space travel; intrasystem | Dremans |
5 | Warp | Matter-antimatter power generation, some matter-energy conversion possible | Interplanetary; trade and colonization | Space travel; warp drive | Vidiians |
6 | Exploratory | Widespread matter-energy conversion and subspace technology | Interstellar; interspecies cooperation and influence | Space travel; warp drive, other techniques possible | Humans |
7 | Advanced | Large-scale space-time alteration and organic-inorganic interface possible | Galactic | Space travel, temporal and interdimensional possible; transwarp, quantom slipstream and similar techniques | Borg |
8 | Transcendent | Advanced psionic abilities, "omnipotence;" permanent space-time alteration possble | Intergalactic, interdimensional | Space, temporal and interdimensional travel | Q |
MODIFIER | DESCRIPTION | EXAMPLE
A | Aware | Aware of alien lifeforms, but planet or system bound culture | Barzans |
B | Preserved | Culture preserved by outside forces or ancient technology; possibly stagnant and/or declining culture | Ocampa |
C | Isolationist | Cut off from non-native contact by choice; possibly stagnant culture | Aldeans |
D | Noncorporeal | Species exists in gaseous or energy form and above classifications may not apply | Calamarain |
N | Nonhumanoid | Species has a solid form other than humanoid and above classifications may not apply | Horta |
S | Shape-shiftering | Species is morphic and above classifications may not apply | Changelings |
T | Telepathic | Species possesses telepathic or empathic abilities | Betazoids |
