The Beginning

"What do you know? As soon as I was convinced we had a new super alien race I find that, no, at the point in their life when they're tearing people up, its just a stage that all alien teenagers go through, and after shedding a couple skins, we're back to little gray aliens. But I'm not complaining. 'The Beginning' was so much like the movie it was scary. It was great actually. I was afraid that after they got the movie finished they'd have to go back to the somewhat slower pace of the television series. I was wrong, 'The Beginning' kept the pace of the movie, if not picking it up somewhat. One of the best season openers in a while. In the scene where Mulder was trying to get them to open the X-Files, I realized just how fantastic his whole theory would sound to people like them. I actually cringed at how unbelievable it sounds. But not as much as I cringed when Scully came up with no evidence to support Mulder. I know she's not doing it to hurt him, but it still felt like a huge betrayal to me. I was really looking forward to her blowing the committee away with irrefutable proof, but then Scully wouldn't be Scully, and our Yin couldn't balance our Yang. I suppose its for the best. I have to say that Mulder and Fowley together just don't cut it. Mulder and Scully work together like a well oiled machine, anyone else with either of them sort of squeaks. I liked the scenes where they talked a bit about what they would believe, but I thought the hand holding was gratuitous. It was fine in the movie, just not needed in this episode to get any message across. Especially after that alien-bite-you-on-the-ass remark. I wish I could say something about our friend Gibson, but I just don't understand him. Though I do appreciate his role in this, and that part about the dormant gene verse his active gene was nice. It added just the right amount of science for those die hard Scully fans. I'm not even going to talk about Fowley, I hate her, I wish she was dead, and she should have died last season, she was on maximum pressers for God's sake!!! I bet Pendrall was better off then she was and he still died. So, Spender decided to deal with the devil, figures. I think it will be interesting to see him and "daddy" try to break Mulder's spirit, though I must say, I don't understand what's up with The CSM, beginning of last season he seems quite fond of Mulder, maybe its all a ruse to ruin Spender. Oh and lastly, a plant in Mulder's office is akin to a rock in a bed of pearls. Ew. I hate seeing Spender able to order Mulder away from his life. I hate Spender in fact. This is the first time that I've ever seen Mulder get any disciplinary action against him. Too bad, it looks as if they're holding Scully's job over him as well. Wonder if he'll comply. So far it doesn't look like it."

"INT. DARK OPERATING ROOM. OFF LIMITS FBI AREA? FOX BUILDING? NIGHT.
A dark shadowy figure enters
Scalpel please...
CUT TO: Chris Carter's skull being sliced open to reveal the 6th season of the X-Files. Images of stacks of money and LA intersperse with his brain.
Another shadowy figure enters, more menacing than the first figure. Is he the cigarette smoking man? No. Our worst fears are confirmed. It is Rupert Murdoch. FOX overlord.
Murdoch: Leave his brain exposed for at least two seasons!
Scalpel holding man: We can't do that now. He'll die.
Murdoch: It's him or us.
Hopefully the show won't run dry of it's blood. This first episode, while nothing to burst one's body open, was a larger than average flesh wound. Mimi Rogers. It's cool that she got an X-Files gig, but her character is an annoyance on the show. She just breaks up the Mulder/Scully interaction, which gives the show it's base, throwing it off in a totally unnecessary direction. It should be about Mulder and Scully, not Mulder and Scully and Mimi. Sorry Mimi. The camera angles and lighting remain distinctly X-Files, and there were some really cool shots and lighting in this episode. Lighting: Dark with interesting outlines. Shots: Cut off at intriguing angles. It all creates, along with the distinctive special effects, the strikingly singular vision that I have come to expect from the X-Files. "

"Okay, so it was a good episode. Not the greatest episode, and definitely not the best premiere we've had, but a good solid episode. Just a few comments: One, I think it was really hard for them to follow up the movie. Nothing would have seemed so grand after that. Two, Mulder, you idiot, where are your loyalties and GET AWAY from that Fowley woman. Three, awww, Gibson and the alien had a touching moment. Four, yay, Scully, for admitting stuff to yourself only AFTER you were true to yourself and got the science to back it up. A good start to the season. I'm looking forward to the rest!"

"I like the idea that the aliens are human, but I'm finding myself disapointed that it is taking such a sci-fi turn. I'm sure that things will get better as the season goes on. I like the twist that the boy (Gibson) is able to communicate with the aliens. I see that as a key to the series, but I'm sure he'll die before he can accomplish much."

"Excellent show. I loved how they picked up with the movie and the season finale. I'm really pissed that Mulder and Scully got kicked out of the x-files, but also that Skinner was replaced. Very cool though!"

"I found this to be an overwhelmingly disappointing episode! By the way, Spender is a bunghole."
