St. James School was established in 1913. One of the pioneering schools in Mountain Province, St. James was set up in the municipality of Besao. In 1969, the high school department of St. James was opened. St. James is one of the schools known for its quality education. Hundreds of professionals who are now based outside of the Philippines trace their schooling at Saint James. In December 1996 tragedy struck when six teachers died while on their way to a field trip to Mainit, Bontoc . The vehicle fell from the mountain road. On September 1, 1997, Mrs. Edit Polilin took over as school head. It was also during this year that Besao National High School-a government school opened its services. Enrollment was then affected at Saint James. In 1998, the school operations went back to normal. Enrollment increased and the school gets to see better days. In the year 2002, the library building (a donation of the International School of Manila) was completed.
