Loom: Rear, Side View

A prized and priceless example of Irekei wood work is found in this large free-standing loom in Khar Th'Sekt. The intricate carving is replete with traditional stylized flame motifs, and the rollers and ratchets are precisely shaped from ironwood, to last for generations. The frame is extremely heavy and will not budge under normal use, despite the fact that it is (as you can see) mounted on rails to be moved over the sand as necessary from the tent-area of one user to the next. Such a tool commonly belongs to an entire city, spending a month with one family, then three weeks with another.

Smaller or more portable looms exist and are owned individually, including the backstrap loom that fastens at one end around a stationary anchor-- perhaps the center pole of the family tent-- and at the other to the weaver himself.
