"Oh, isn’t it nice to be suddenly so highly regarded."
Fox Mulder, 'Pilot'

I suppose one could assume you’ve made an impact when you end up as number 1 on a list of 25 – make that 24… they were kidding about the last one (man, are they funny or what?) … reasons to visit the Official X-Files site.

The following is an extract from a mail-out to Philes from the Official X-Files website, under the heading of '25 Valid Reasons Why You Should Visit The X-Files Official Site Every Day':

1. Sending us hordes of email at askus@thexfiles.com to say that you are an X-Phile for Mulder is the way you get your kicks. And we still answer you back.

Despite the inaccuracy of the statement - quite a number of people we know still haven't had answers to their questions - in some ways it is gratifying to know that our voice has been heard.

But…

Getting our kicks? KICKS? You think we’re doing this for fun? For a laugh? You hold the X-Philes who admire the character of Mulder - and their concerns - in so little regard? Why am I not surprised?

Consider this, if you will.

This is the same group affiliated to the publishers of the XF magazine, a rep of whom told the ATXF newsgroup that MVP Media don’t like David. And MVP Media are the same group who's fulfillment manager told one of his staff to "get this woman off my back now" when a fan club member sent a polite 4th email in as many months trying to resolve a query related to a membership and merchandise order. This is the same group who run a fan club which has failed to deliver merchandise ordered in a timely manner to anyone we know. A fan club who advertise products which are no longer available. A fan club which charges international memberships at almost double the U.S. rate, yet sends the magazines via Reticula, ensuring copies appears on the stands locally (2 months after issue) before the fan club copies arrive. (The last magazine issued is an exception… that actually had an airmail sticker on it, amazingly.)

Take all that, then add this latest outgoing promotion of the Official Website which starts out by mocking an effort of many to express concerns about the upcoming season, then proceeds to be condescending and insulting of Phile intelligence in its approach, and its fairly obvious what the folks at 1013 and FOX think of the fans. It must be what they think, eh? I mean, surely they endorse what is said on the website? Its Official, afterall.

So much for all those platitudes of gratitude to the online and offline Philes for helping to make the show such a success.

Thanks, guys. Next time you want a bunch of people to get enthusiastic about your latest endeavor – oh, say, The LoneGunmen show – don’t call us, eh? We don’t get our 'kicks' out of being insulted.

And Frank Spotnitz? The letter was appreciated, but in the face of all the above, it’s a little difficult to believe we’ve been taken seriously by any of you. And that’s okay. But you won’t mind if we laugh as we tear up our fan club subscription notices, will you? Or when we laugh as we spend our money on other products? Or when we laugh as we switch over to other networks and other shows?
