Ratings: Here's the figures, you do the math!

The recent L.A. Times article provided some data relating to ratings for season 8 as compared to season 7, stating that "the ratings this season are far better than last year" . That claim is baseless because the the figures quoted to support it are simply wrong. Further, the article compares the ratings figures of a full season of the series (season 7) which included six rerun episodes, with what is barely more than half a season (season 8) with only two reruns. This sort of approach to statistical analysis would have any statistician screaming 'foul play'!

The following chart shows a comparison of the ratings figure and the corresponding viewer numbers, based on the data provided by Nielsen Media Research. We suggest you look at the numbers and do the math yourself.
