At the beginning of Love Hina. We find out that Maehara Shinobu is a Junior
High School student, who is experiencing a lot of problems in her life. Our
first glimpse of Shinobu is when Keitaro has first arrived in town. He is
sitting on a bench and sees Shinobu sitting down on another bench a few meters
away. Keitaro sees that Shinobu is down and sketches a picture of Shinobu
smiling. After some intervention by the three old men, Shinobu sees the sketch
and says, "That's so cruel." After that Keitaro runs away. Shinobu
sees in the sketch that she is smiling and tries to smile.
At that time, Shinobu was experiencing some family difficulties. Her parents
were getting a divorce and it was tearing up her family and herself as well.
Each of the parents deciding to move and gain custody of her. The three old
men say it best when they say, "...people change, and their location
changes as well."
After much intervention by Keitaro, he asks Shinobu if she would like to stay
because, "It's not the children's idea for divorce, it's the parents."
Finally, Shinobu is allowed to stay at the Hinatasou and Keitaro will take
responsibility. We also find out that Shinobu is a great cook and is soon
the head chef at the Hinatasou. From now on Shinobu has changed as is a better
person...she also looks up to Keitaro who she calls "sempai" (Senior).
