Questions for midterm:

Q1. In one paragraph or maximum one page explain crucial problem that you have found in class project (any of the 2 chosen Long Island colleges information system according 7X2'Cs in any 7 layers.)(20 pts)

In my class project I did some analysis about NYIT website. Throughout the research there are some crucial problems.

First of all, a crucial problem happens to the search engine. Click its search button in the home page, type “NYIT” in the search box; it turns out “your search for nyit did not match any document”. As an education institution, no any document related to its own name, it is dubious that the school is able to perform well in academic.

Secondly, find out the NYIT magazine in column Alumni, click current issue bookmark, a magazine cover which published in Nov 3rd, 2006, is displayed in the front. It violates currency out of the 7C’s, up to date is critical for an academic journal.

Also, in appearance layer, NYIT website didn’t do well. The whole page only takes center part and leaves a huge space in the screen. Because of this, all the contents shrink and the words given in sites are too small to read. It gives readers a unpleasant feeling, especially for those who visit the website for the first time, say the freshmen.

Q2. Pick search program from the text book.(20 pts)

(a) Run it as it is (input/output)

#include<fstream.h>

#include<string.h>

Main(){

   Char searchname[15], name[15], telephone[14];

   Cout<<”enter the search name:”;

   Cin>>searchname;

   Ifstream fin(“data.in”);

   While(fin>>name>>telephone){

      If(strcmp(searchname,name)== 0){

        Cout<<telephone<<endl;

        Return 0;

      } //end of if

    } // end of loop

    Cout<<”name not found”<<endl;

    Return 0;

} // end of main

Input file data.in:

Adam        (516)111-1111

Sarah        (718)222-2222

Abraham     (212)333-3333

John         (914)444-4444

Mary         (203)555-5555

Output of the telephone search program

Enter the search name: Mary

Result is (203)555-5555

(b) Change it to relate to your project or class search engine (it should be in C++.)

Use copy and paste your program with input/output in a word document.

Q3. In one paragraph or maximum one page explain crucial problem that you have found in project (the top colleges and tutorial system information system according 7X2'Cs in any 7 layers.)(20 pts)

In my top college project, I made some analysis in Yale University.

1. First of all, we can easily find that many of Yale’s web pages, including its home page, contains no copyright claim, as well there is no upgrading date and other statements about the website maintaining work. It is not completed in content and context.

2. Even though most pages have been updated to 2007, there are still some pages lacking of currency. For example, when open the link below, the last updated was on May17, 2005.

URL: https://secure.its.yale.edu/cas/servlet/login
Certifying Authority: Philip E. Long, Chief Information Officer, Yale University
Last Updated: May 17, 2005

3. Completeness and coverage. It is really hard to find a broken link in Yale’s web pages, however, the link below: http://ysnlibrary.blogspot.com/2007/03/ysn-library-march-12-march-23.html,

Several classes’ links listed in the library schedule, but none of the links works, instead, they result in “error” after clicking into.

4. An additional problem of Yale’s website is about its search engine, when we go to Yale Alumni Magazine, its sole search engine is Google Search, as the top university in the world, Yale should has its own search engine, which designed, used, ranged in, tested, and totally managed by the school itself, rather than depends on an other public search engine.

Q4. Identification layer: 7 W's in your project

Identification (Who is who)

Remember 7 W's:

Who, What, When, Where, Why, Which, and last one is wow. (It's "how" backward)

Who- A sort of history, mission, vision, expectations, values and goals of the company.

I will identify the 7W’s in NYIT website.

Who: for example, when questioned that who teach NYIT classes, the site tells us: our classes are taught by full- and part-time faculty members who combine academic accomplishment with up-to-date, “real-world” knowledge.

What: For example, what is NYIT’s mission? The answer is: to provide career-focused education, to offer access to opportunity, to enhance learning through technology and to encourage applications-oriented research.

When: New York Institute of Technology was founded in 1955 with a mission

Where: NYIT has three campuses in the New York metropolitan area. Two are on Long Island, a suburban region east of New York City. The Dorothy and Alexander Schure Old Westbury campus is nestled among several former estates in the historic Gold Coast region of Nassau County’s north shore. The Central Islip campus is located on Suffolk County’s south shore, just minutes from several Atlantic Ocean beaches. The third NYIT campus is located in the New York City borough of Manhattan, just a few blocks from Lincoln Center and Central Park.

Why: for example, the website lists “Why does NYIT have three campuses?” It gives the answer as following: The New York area offers a wealth of opportunity for educational development and personal growth. NYIT is unique in that we take full advantage of the particular amenities of the different urban and suburban settings of the region by offering students the option of taking classes on all three campuses. For example, you may choose to schedule a few classes each week at the Manhattan campus so you can spend time exploring New York City’s cultural and business centers. If you prefer a quiet, natural setting, the Old Westbury campus is enveloped in acres of trees, plants and unspoiled natural beauty. The Central Islip campus encourages socialization, with facilities including a bowling alley, indoor swimming pool, full-court gymnasium, fitness room and 400-seat auditorium. All three campuses provide libraries, student computer labs, dining facilities and extracurricular activities.

How: there are many “how”, for instant, when asked that how do I apply NYIT? It explains that students can apply online or to request a standard application and catalog.

Q5. Identify 10 commands in the HTML layer of your project

The ten commands are: html, a, img, table, form, input, select, li, textarea, mailto

In my NYIT project, I analyzed it according to the 10 commands:

Html is the beginning of the program, any page is started with<html> and ends with </html>

Table refers to the contents arranged in the form of a table. In the library page, the table is programmed as:

<table width="780" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">

img is the pictures showed in the web page <img src="homeimages/vote.gif" alt="NYIT Library wants to know what NYIT's favorite social network is." width="150" height="100" hspace="20" border="0">

input is the command of what you should iuput into the box, for example, when using search engine.

Select(<SELECT><OPTION>) and li means list(<LI>)

Form is the way to get information from users, <form action="https://apply.nyit.edu/apply/secure/adm_personalize.asp" method="post" id="form1" name="form1">

Q6 Identify seven components of VBScript or JavaScript in your project.

Seven component of VBscript or JavaScript:- if, loop, array, function, event, declaration, and object.

Loop is a process of going over and over is known as repetition.

If: The expression if compares two values using the comparison operators as below:

Equality ==, less than <, greater than>, not equal !=, less than or equal <=, greater than or equal >=
