Species: Well it wouldn't be much fun if he was human, aye? He is a Sevathos. (From the planet Lanifal) They are creatures that look almost human, with a few furry aspects, but really their lifestyle is quite different from that of a human. In fact, they are a lot more, in personality, like a wolf. Before they get to be a year old, they are very playful, and often quite careless, as is a puppy. After they get to a year, their personality starts to show, and they begin to think a little more about things. They become curious, asking, wondering, and doing everything. They do a whole lot of growing that year, so that when they are two, they are considered a young adult. By this time, they are quite stable, but not totally grown up. They still have a little spunk in them, though they have almost completely grown out of most of the puppyish aspects of carelessness and the "everything is a game" theory. They are only beginning to gain the good decision-making quality, and feel inclined to be a little more independent than is usual, though they most definitely stay within a pack or group of some sort for their whole lives.
Most of the time, a Sevathos will stay with their family for their whole life. Each family is a pack, and within the pack are ranks, and jobs to be done. The children (anyone under a year) have no ranks or permanent jobs, most of the time, but often seem to form into ranks by themselves. One child (or pup) will show dominance over another, though the submissive pup may be dominant in another situation, over a different pup. And on goes the cycle. The parents and older Sevathos, whom all take part in raising the young ones, will see who is more responsible, and who is fit for what job, and they decide from there what ranks to put the pups in when they get old enough. In the mean time, though, as children, everyone else seems to be above them, and they are expected to be obedient to any small job they might be issued which needs done. Adults are rarely harsh with the pups, though, and let them be young and play while they can, though they must learn as well while they are young.
The older a Sevathos gets, the wiser they seem to get, and the better they get to know everyone and everything around them, including the lands they live on. Sometimes they will stay on the same lands for their whole lives, a territory which can be up to twenty miles in diameter. It is not that they are attached to the lands, but rather the other Sevathos that live there with them.
As for their territories - they do not think of it in terms of owning and not owning lands, but rather they are the ones that live on it, and an unwelcome member is better off waiting at the borderlands, which are checked regularly by scouts. However, any member of the pack or another wolf that they know from another pack may come to visit at any time, walking right past the borders. There are also allying packs, often not too far from each other, and some have a sort of mutual lands for them, where any of the Sevathos may go at one time. The ones that have jobs will work in a town here, and some of the creatures will tend to beautiful gardens for visiting in and walking through. They don't always need jobs, though, because they hunt on their own lands for food, and if they need to build a room underground (as they will either live in caves or underground, hidden rooms) and need supplies, the whole pack together will donate their money to the ordeal. There is always a few members in the pack who do have jobs.
Now, you may be wondering, how do the other Sevathos know where one pack's borders start? There is a fence or wall, which is low enough to jump over. Some families will have wooden fences, others string material from one tree to the next until the whole territory is outlined. Zik's pack had a small rock wall, made of limestone from the ground they lived on. It was slightly crude, but they did the best they could to stack it all neatly and evenly, so that it was small, but not so small that it might be missed. It stood about two feet in height, and was checked daily. By checked, I mean that the scouts of the pack, and sometimes others as well, would split up and walk their assigned area of the wall, making sure that no one was there, waiting, and that the rocks were still all right.
If one did not come back with the others, a higher ranking Sevathos would be sent for, to see what was wrong, and if needed, to deal with others at the borders.
The older (but not really... OLD) wolves usually got high ranks, though it was not a requirement. The leaders, one male and one female, were often mother and father of many, and had been on the lands for as long as they could remember. They were level headed and often quite wise, though they rarely lose all of their playfulness, even when they get exceptionally elderly.
They are meat-eating creatures, with a few berries or grains of some sort thrown into the mix on occasion. Therefore, hunting is a big part of their lives. Mostly, they are knife fighters, sometimes using bows. Some certain breeds of Sevathos, in fact, which live down South much farther than Zik, do not even know what a bow is. They are quite organized at hunting, and a whole pack, save the pups and pupsitters, will go on a hunt at one time. On these hunts, using the knife throwing and working together techniques, they will take down deer-like creatures of all sorts and sizes. Some of the smaller ones may be taken by one Sevathos, with a bow and arrow, but a hunt is fun, and seems to bring them together. Overall, they are dedicated, close knit families, and have the ability to love unconditionally.
