The next snorkeling trip took us around an island that was origianlly purchased by Mr. Dole of the Dole Pineapple fame to grow pineapples on. He brought in his own workers and gave them homes on the island and employed them to grow pineapples and maintain the island. When the pineapple growing ceased because of a vast change in rainfall on his island "Lanai" he gave the employees permission to stay there and reside on the island. Now with only two towns and a couple of Resorts. The island looks like a deserted island at first glance. We left in "Ocean Riders Rigid Bottom Inflatables" with a crew of two and 10 other snorkelers on board. We snorkeled on remote beaches that no one else was even near and also on some points that were just sticking out of the ocean. One of them called "Shark Fin Rock" We learned the ancient Hawaiian custom of burrying their royal dead in the sides of the sheer cliffs by lowering someone to stuff the remains into a crevice in the rock and fill it in with small rocks. This was done while hanging suspended from a rope over the face of the cliff a few hundred feet up. When the burrial was finished the person on the end of the rope was cut lose and sacrificed. This person did the burial because they beleived that when they plunged to their death they were accepted into the royal family. Today you can see the burial sites by looking for a clusters of small stones in the face of the solid rock cliffs. We seen hundreds of these. We had lunch aboard the inflatable and the photo of the spread is below.

(photo to come)

It consisted of cold cuts, cheeses, and fresh vegies and dip along with drinks. The crew on the inflatable was wonderful too. We seen several groups of dolpin on the way out to Lanai and back and a few times the crew would turn the boat and go back so the dolpihins could run with us. What an adventure. I would recomend that anyone going to Hawaii go out on a rigid bottom inflatable while they are there for a great experience. There are several companies on Maui that have these.

We returned very tired but elated from the adventures we had that day.
