Population  1,236,914,658 (1998)
China is the first country to ever reach a population of a billion people (reached in 1992).  Today there are about 1.3 billion people in China, approximately 129 persons per square kilometer.  This means that there are a lot of children to educate.  This is one of the classes that I taught during my time in China.  They are amazing students with tremendous respect for their teachers.  They are studious and well behaved both in and out of class.
Education:  preschool to universities
These are "my kids" whom I spent a lot of time with teaching them English.  They are the only child in their families and that means all the money gets spent on them.  Yes they are spoiled, but they are not brats.  They love to help others and they really enjoy building, painting, or acting by using their imagination.  They are very active and so it takes a lot of energy to keep up with them.
Generations: same blood, same house
This is a three generation picture of a family I got to know really well.  The grandmother is second from left and her daughter is far right.  The children are cousins, the oldest cousin is far left.  The children have great respect for their elders and learn many lessons from them.  It is common to find the grandparents tending to the children as the parents are hard at work to earn a living.
National and Ethnic Languages
Mandarin Chinese is the national language, but is originally the language of the Han Chinese in the north.  Other languages include Cantonese and Taiwanese.
