printable cover letter - updated March 9, 2001
Dear Camp Director:

I am looking for a summer job with growth potential.
As a teacher 10 years, my aim is from now on to make camping a full-time career, and even though I am still available for a summer-only job this year, I am more than willing to consider long-range commitment, and will favor job offers that allow that possibility.

My main assets are a lifelong involvement with camping and nature activities, with training and experience leading camping and outdoors activities for the last 15+ years, three degrees in education (two 4-year, one 3-year), extensive experience teaching in the classroom setting and also leading camp program activities (resume here. Details on program skills here)

The major difficulties I find in getting a full-time camp job at this time are that I am not an American citizen, and that my experience in American camps is of only two full seasons as a counselor.
As to the first issue, I can get a suitable work visa if I have a formal job offer from a camp, so that should not be a major problem. As to my relative lack of time spent in American camping, I can more than offset that with my wide experience in the many areas of camping and camp program, management, maintenance, operation, etc. For the long range, I am also ready and looking forwards to the chance to further my formal training in the Camping / Recreation fields.

Besides my varied program activities skills, I would be a great choice especially for a camp that beyond its summer program wants to enter or strengthen its position in school-related activities, such as environmental, nature & science studies, and adventure, initiative, and other emotional-growth activities. My background as a teacher would prove very valuable in such a setting, when it comes to prepare educational materials and programs that fit school curricula. As well, my skills in media and computer-based communication should prove their worth in developing aggressive marketing tools for the camp that sees the advantages of letting me call it home.

Currently I cooperate with the local recruiter for the YMCA International Camp Counselor Program (ICCP), and I am scheduled to give a one-week course in Adventure Education (contents are to be those of summer camp staff training) for the second largest University in Bolivia.

I am open to any job offers - I am more than understanding to the fact that an immigrant needs a basic opportunity to make his mark and then go on to larger things, so in principle I would take even a standard summer Counselor job, though you would find me quite able to handle a mid-management position such as Program Director or Assistant Director. I would be particularly suited to run your Trip (canoe, hike, bike) program, if you have one, or want to start one, thanks to my extensive skills and experience in logistics, risk management, camp craft. Also, and given the proper situation, my foreign languages (2+3) and multi-cultural skills could prove quite valuable.

I am available by April 15th, and would prefer to be employed as soon as possible, though as I said, I am willing to consider all possibilities.

Almost too many details on myself can be found in this web site, as well as references and assorted information:

I'll be glad to answer any queries you may have,

sincerely
