Questions, yours and mine
Will this foreigner be able to run an American camp ?
This basic doubt has a lot to do with whether I have the abilities to follow American ways of doing things and deal with people, being Uruguayan and Bolivian in citizenship.
Please consider the following: I graduated from an American High School; I have worked two seasons in American camps, as counselor (BSA and YMCA); I am a member of the La Paz Community Church, an English-language church in Bolivia mostly attended by US Embassy people; Most of my reading, educational background and values are American (which causes me some trouble here, believe me). By the way, contracting me would be completely legal. It just takes some paperwork we can deal with.
What special needs/requests do I have ?
Besides general issues dealing with a positive-minded work place, I prefer it to be smoke-free, Christian based or at least tolerant as to religion. I require on-site residence, and a small (US$ 800) one-time relocation stipend. Negotiable issues include several weeks of non-paid time to pursue lay Christian mission work, and chances to improve my training in the adventure education and recreation fields. I consider necessary a reliable Internet connection not only for my particular use, but to develop aggressive marketing tools
How much do you pay ?
Most advertisements make no mention as to pay or benefits. Though I have a lot of hands-on willingness, as I expect to assume multiple and important responsibilities, I also expect my salary to reflect it, maybe not at the beginning, but certainly as my effort shows positive results in time. Yet I am more than open to consider non-monetary benefits, as could be the use of a camp pick-up as car, utilities expenses, and coverage of training costs and manuals and some travel expenses. I am more than willing to make all the extra effort necessary for success of the camp and program, in a mutually positive setting.
Will I last ?
It's a bit early to answer this, but I do expect we will build a mutually
satisfying work relationship, and that I will grow old there.
I expect to marry in a couple years, and that will mean raising a family.
Circumstances will see the details, but I expect that will mean finally settling down,
and of everything I know about, what
I would prefer would be a lifetime career in Camp Management.
I think our camp could use you, but...
I might want to consider a mid-level management position (Program Director, Activities Coordinator, etc), as a reasonable momentary path towards a directorship. I believe I can be loyal and take the training and experience in view of later serving in a more significant position in this camp, if that is a clearly set purpose of both parts.
What is your camp like ?
If I make it even close to a short list, I would very much appreciate further information on your camp, maybe a brochure, and more details on how this job has been done before, and how you see it ought to be done
