Holden Caulfield was a person, a complicated being with many differences within himself, so it is impossible to tell whether he was a man of faith or if he wasn’t. He appears to be a man of faith because of his faith in Jane, Phoebe, and kids. Holden trusts that Jane will always be pure and good person, never falling to Stradlater’s level. He believes that she will always be a true person and keep her ways such as always keeping her kings in the back row when playing checkers. Holden has faith in Phoebe by always believing she will always voice the correct opinion and always help him. He trusts that she will always be there, believes that she will always come to him when he needs family with him, as in the end when he asks her to meet him at the library. Holden believes that there will always be some group of kids who are not corrupted and trusts that they will let him stay near them so that he can help them stay pure. Although Holden Caulfield may appear to be a man of faith, he does not have faith in most other people, in himself, and in humanity as a whole. Holden does not have either belief or faith in others, calling them fake and phony; believing they don’t act like themselves but are whoever society tells them to be. He doesn’t trust grownups, even those he has had good times with such as Mr. Antolini and Mr. Spencer who he starts out. He doesn’t even believe his own parents care about him, he thinks they only try to get him out of the house and away from them as much as they can. Just about every stranger is weird, laughing in the streets like a hyena or playing the piano with trills. Holden doesn’t trust himself. He is always changing who he is. At times he is the catcher in the rye, sometimes a people shooter, and sometimes pretending to be a big bully. He talks about how he hates when people call others grand, but he himself calls people kings and queens. He thinks he needs to punch people all the time because that’s what others would do in his place, or thinks he needs to give a girl the time for the same reason. Holden doesn’t believe that he can be who he is. Holden distrusts humanity as a whole. He believes that human ideals are wrong and culture is backwards. He doesn’t like Hollywood or the cities on the east coast because they are corrupt. Football, movies, and other recreations of western culture are shown as evil in the highest extent. He doesn’t believe that people can grow up and stay uncorrupted. Holden Caulfield is a complicated person and cannot be thrown into a group of faithful or unfaithful people. |
