Some Background & Facts of the Long Neck Women :

The Padaung Tribe women is also known as the Long Neck women. They are a sub-group of karen enthnic from Burma. Women wear the neck-rings made from brass usually around 5 years old, and keep the rings until death. They add rings as they grow. The most rings they wore is 32 rings. In tradition, only girls born on wednesday of a full moon will wear the ring, but now other youngsters are enlisted to meet the tourist demand. The orgins of the customs are said to be protection against tiger attacks and symbols of beauty, wealth and status.

X-rays from Burma's General Hospital show the shoulder bones of Long Neck Women have been forced down by the weight of the coils (can be as heavy as 5 kg). The collarbone and upper ribs have also been pushed diagonally downward. The bone crunching ultimately forces their previously horizontal shoulders into a slanting A-frame. By wrapping it all in brass, part of the shoulder bones appear as a lengthened lower neck. (see the Right X-ray)
