According to Melvin Parsons son Bess Sandlin Kizziah Parsons:
"Bess was the 15th and last child of Daniel Sandlin, a pioneer who came from North Carolina in 1850 along with the Turner and Lanier families...Daniel died when Bess was 4so she did not remember him." Bess told her children of living on their homesteaded farm in Tuscaloosa County,AL, on what is now called Sandlin Mountain. The Jim Walter Brookwood coal mine is there now.
