Mistakenly called the Pompey's Pillar, this pillar was actually constructed in honour of Emperor Diocletain at the end of the 4th century. It is the tallest ancient monument in Alexandria. However, a most unique experience in Alexandria is a visit to the Catacombs of Kom es-Shouqafa, tombs built in the Roman days with a clear ancient Egyptian religious theme. Just follow the winding staircase that descends deep into the groud...

It is said that these tombs were found when a donkey fell through the hole one day...It was not the first time that donkeys contributed to archaeological discovery in Egypt :) This hole in the middle is said to be used to lower the deceased into the tombs.
Obviously this was a rich family. The chamber was decorated with ancient Egyptian themes of mummifying the dead.
However, many more chambers are like this, simple like dorm beds, except that they are for the dead :) The lower ones are all submerged in ground water. Walking around on my own, from empty chamber to another empty chamber, I could feel goosebumps...
