Springtime in Korea

Korea has four very distinct seasons. Spring is a time for blossoming flowers, burining old rice fields to prepare for a new planting season and plenty of student demonstrations in Kwangju (see previous pages). The weather in the springtime is wonderful. One thing I liked about Korea was the distinction between the seasons... something I appreciate even more now that I live in Texas, where there are only two seasons - summer and not summer. Winter in Korea was COLD, with the siberian winds blowing down the peninsula. Spring was bright and clear. Summer has its own sub-seasons, including about a week or two where the air is so hot and humid that if you walk out the door and across the street you are already sweating. This is followed by about a week or two of non-stop heavy rain. The rest of the summer is hot but quite nice. Fall is just beautiful, and the mountains are ablaze with yellows, oranges and reds. And then it is back to winter, and all that glorious snow!

Mudeung Mountain on fire... Preparing the fields for planting by burining the stubble leftover from the previous year. This is supposed to kill the bugs and grubs in the soil and add some fertilizer from the ashes.

This is George and Hae Young. George was a fellow teacher, Hae Young was one of his students, and is now my wife :)
The picture on the left is Sosaewon, a very quiet, beautiful and peaceful place to go in the afternoon to relax. More information is available at The Kwangju government website. The garden dates back to the early 1500s and is considered an important example of landscape architecture.
