The Big Cracker...

15th March 1997

It's 11.10 pm, Saturday and yes, I'm back at my lab. No, there's no music playing.

I am about to embark on yet another one of those mails. So, if you're in a hurry, please do not be obliged to read on.

Not succumbing to the loneliness and boredom of the night, I set off for yet another adventure in town. It was 6.30 pm when I boarded the bus after a gruelling 45 minute wait.

On reaching cracking KOMTAR, I tool a stroll to pitiful Penang Plaza. There weren't many people there except for the brightly lit Wellsave. I poked my wonder nose into Salvation, Guardian, Times and Wellsave. It was about 8 pm when I left. On the way back to the big cracker, I popped into Come Come (Lai Lai). On riding an escalator, I exchanged a distant "Hi!" to one of the IC church members who went for the Tronoh Annual Camp who was on the floor below. It was a pleasant surprise.

After Come Come, I Go Go for dinner. I wondered into Transfer Road. After buying a copy of Aliran (the cover price has increased RM1 to RM3 per copy), I found myself at a warung just opposite Ambassy Hotel. I had 2 pyramid nasi lemaks, 1 roti canai and.... mmmm.... teh halia. My dinner was only RM2.20.

Not satisfied, I landed myself along buzy Penang Road. It was almost 9 pm. Cathay was going to erupt with Dante's Peak. So, I stayed away. I was also hoping to browse through some 2nd hand Readers Digests (being the miser I am) in Chowrastra Bazaar but unfortunately the whole 2nd floor was closed. Although I am no where interested in 'those' books, rumour has it that if you're alone, chances are the person behind the counter will give you that suspicious glance and whisper, "Mahukah? Mahukah?"

My adventure was also an eye opener. I saw 2 children (probably of one of the traders) sharing a bowl of laksa placed on the sidewalk. I was happy to see them shift their dinner to a more decent location a little later. Vagabonds and vagrants still make their rounds. Sometimes, I feel helpless, not knowing what to do or what can I do to help.

Thank you for reading this if you've got this far. I appreciate you taking the time. God bless you.

Yours bartly,
Bart
