They say great things comes from a good idea. In 5 Watt, it didn't go that way around, they thought it was a silly idea to form a band in the first place. It just a fun project, they never thought it would be as big as now. Well, actually 5 Watt hasn't been 'that big', but the surprising fact that they have endured for the last 6 years in the punk rock scene made them wonders. It began in a small suburbs on the skirts of Jakarta, the capitol city of Indonesia. Five guys from a band called Gratax which formerly playing some weird and obscure music one day told to themselves, "Hey, why don't we play faster music like punk rock ? ", and when they agreed to do so, they change their name to 5 Watt.
5 Watt first members was Arie, Anto, Yoko, Adam and Yayang. At first, they covered Pennywise and Rancid songs. In 1998, Adam resign from 5 Watt and the lead vocalist drops to one of their friends, Paul. With his great stage act and great temper, Paul always attract crowd of people when 5 Watt was playing on some shows. At one time Paul was having a road accident, but the next day, when 5 Watt has to play on some show, he didn't take a day off, in fact he sings on stage more brutally than ever before, with his arms tied up with gips! The spirit he brought makes 5 Watt a one exciting group. But sadly, Paul was only had one chance to put his voice on a record with 5 Watt. It's in the A Call For Unity Compilation, where Paul sings Brotherhood. In the year 2000, due to continue his education, Paul went to Phillipines.

With the situation of not having a lead vocalist, plus the resigning of Yayang. The guys agreed to take a moment off from the band. For about 3 - 4 months, 5 Watt took a break. Somewhere in August 2000, Yoko, Arie and Anto, the remaining members of 5 Watt decided to "recruit" another vocalist. Then Patrick comes up. Before joining with 5 Watt, Patrick was a bass player on a band called The Bandits. With Patrick around, 5 Watt had a different purpose about the band, they want to make something out of it. With the Fight For Goodness Compilation by Fight For Goodness Records and It Smells, It Stings, It Burns Compilation by New Island Records, 5 Watt took a new level of experience in recording music as for preparing materials for their upcoming first album. In late 2001, they set out to take a recording for their first album, Hear They Comes. The Album finally released by Struggle Records in 2002. That album brings the new spirit, excitement, and joy of punk rock music scene especially in Jakarta. From songs like Zelda, Walking Alone, or the cheerful Ucok Haus, 5 Watt brings a new definition of punk rock music. This kind of music and added with Patrick's insane style on stage, makes 5 Watt a one band that will be on your conversations when you go home after the show. In 2002, 5 Watt "recruit" a second guitar player, his name is Sony. The arrival of Sony with his great rhythm, makes 5 Watt music more complicated and good to listen too, then you can expect to have more new stuff from their new songs which will come up over the years to come. Remember, these all things started from a silly idea to form a band......
