Korean Animal Protection Society provides animal rescue and welfare services, lobbies, and organizes protest demonstrations within Korea. KAPS are dedicated to ending the plight of companion animals in Korea.

KAPS has provided care for needy dogs and cats in Korea and helped to create a statutory framework for future animal protection in Korea. They have been raising awareness about the cruelty and injustice inflicted upon dogs and cats within Korea. But much more needed to be done and KAPS will not rest till the torturing, slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats will come to an end. At present, KAPS plans to build a new sanctuary which will serve as both a care center for abandoned, abused and rescued animals and a national public education centre.

Rescue and Adoption

KAPS continues to rescue and provide a safe heaven for abused and neglected companion animals who would have met a tragic end without KAPS's intervention. There are 400 dogs and cats at the sanctuary and with volunteers' help and support from domestic and international members, KAPS wishes to secure happy endings for all animals under its protection.

All rescued animals are neutered at the shelter before adoption and one of KAPS' aim is to educate the public over responsible ownership to prevent a tragedy in the first place.

Mongsil and Hyundong Lee

Mongsil was first adopted by a Korean girl who was born in America. She looked after her for a year but returned the dog to the shelter as the dog was not housetrained. Hyundong Lee wanted to adopt Mongsil but Sunnan was concerned that the dog would feel lonely while Hyundong was at work as he was living alone. She also wondered how he could cope with the problem of Mongsil not being housetrained. However he told her that he would try to cure Mongsil's problem and assured her that his work place is his own office and he would always bring the dog to work with him.

As he understood and accepted all the conditions for adopting a dog from KAPS, Monsil went to live with him in June, 2002. KAPS heard from him again in October and he reported that the dog was very happy with him. In December, he visited the shelter with Monsil and that made everyone in the shelter very happy. Sunnan felt like she saw a child who left home again.

Dabi's story

Dabi was rescued by Davide Demichelis, a reporter for Rai Tre, an Italian television network, from Chil-Sung market. Dabi is now living with Davide and his family in Italy. The rescue story and Dabi's new life have been reported in many newpaper articles in Italy.

Dabi loves walking and Davide is happy to have found a tireless walking companion in Dabi who was seriously ill when she was rescued from the market (many animals suffer serious health problems while they are waiting their death in the market places) but now has completely recovered. They are both very happy to find each other and Dabi is enjoying every moment of her new life.

Campaign in Korea

Every year KAPS lead a demonstration against the killing and torturing of companion animals in Korea. Members all over Korea join the demonstrations to illustrate their strong will to end the cruel practice of consuming dogs and cats. The consumption of men's best friend is believed to be the basis of cruelty to all animals and a direct violation of the essence of Korean tradition, reciprocity and trust.
