The 1998 Hunting Season

Weird Weather, Deer, Family and Friends

1998 saw many things during the deer hunting season. Weather was a big factor as the northeast United States saw temperatures way above normal. I stuck to the "program" of staying out in the woods as much as possible and it paid off. Many times as you'll see, when I was out in the woods the deer were right in my yard!!!!

As I noted above I traveled the state of New York in search of deer and here they are in my back yard!!! Now, I do not hunt in my yard and these were taken before sunrise in early January after we received our 15th day of snow in a row!!! The generally will winter in the woods that seperate 2 streets that are about 1 mile apart.

You can read about my 1998 hunting by reading my journal CLICK (HERE) . Here are 2 of my little buddies. Matt is the older child who was kind enough to go dogging after this buck laying in some pine trees. The other is my oldest E.J. Thanks AGAIN MATTY!!!

I have tried to teach my boys that if they want the deer to come around they need to set out something to attract them. After significant research into the feeding of these animals I decided that we would set out 5 pounds of corn a day. This way they could not depend solely on the corn for food my research indicated that 1 deer should get 7-9 pounds of browse a day). This is a picture of the boys in the back yard feeding the deer. They do this in the morning because by the time we get home in the evening they will already be back in the yard feeding.

Here are a few more pictures of the deer in the yard. Normally we had a doe and a button buck coming every day. At times we had up to 8 deer feeding (or laying) in the yard. The snow was tough in January but February saw abnormally low snow falls and that helped the deer.
