New Zealand Huts from T to V |
Tarn Ridge Where: South end of Tarn Ridge, Tararua Forest Park Description: DOC (16) Access: 3 hours from Dorset Ridge Hut, 5 hours from Te Matawai Hut via Arete, Lancaster and the Waiohine Pinnacles, 6-7 hours from Mitre Flats Hut, 6-7 hours from Jumbo Hut and 7-8 hours from Powell Hut. Comments: This modern hut (1995?) replaces the smaller hut at the north end of Tarn Ridge and may replace Dorset Ridge Hut. Tank water. 8 mattresses and 4 sleeping platforms. Potbelly stove but no wood or coal when I was there. Wonderful views over the headwaters of the Waingawa River to Bannister and Waingawa with Table Ridge on the right. Te Matawai Where: 532 metres below Pukematawai, Tararua Forest Park Description: MTC/DOC (30) Access: 2 hours from South Ohau Hut via the steep Yeates 500 Track, 3.5 hours from Waiopehu Hut, 5 hours from Tarn Ridge Hut. Comments: A big L-shaped hut with 2 big sleeping platforms (3 mattresses) in one arm and the living area in the other. Indoor water. One cooking bench and a battered table. A partially con/destructed porch traps the sun in the afternoon. Good views up to Pukematawai from the front door - better views from the helicopter clearing just up the hill. Click here for a distant view of the hut. Picture courtesy of Adam James Matich |
Totara Flats Where: Waiohine Valley, Tararua Forest Park Description: DOC (35) Access: 4 hours from Holdsworth Lodge, 5 hours from Tutuwai Hut. Comments: A central hut for the Kaitoke to Holdsworth trip (3 days). Sited under trees at the north-west corner of Totara Flats (largest flat in Tararuas at 2 km by 0.5 km). Gas stove and running water. Have a look at Sayer's Hut over the river. |
Triangle Where: Ruahine Forest Park Description: DOC (6) Access: 3/4 hours from Rangiwhahia Hut. Comments: An easy trip over the tops. Steep descent to hut and steep climb out. 6 bunks. |
Trilobite Where: Cobb Valley, Kahurangi National Park Description: DOC (14) Access: 3 hours from Balloon Hut. 5 hours from Fenella Hut. Myttons Hut is less than an hour away. Comments: Typical road-end hut. Picnic table and barbecue outside. |
Tutuwai Where: Tauherenikau Valley, Tararua Forest Park Description: DOC (20) Access: 5 hours from the Kaitoke road end. Comments: Set on a bank above a river flat (good camping). Gas stoves and running water. Potbelly stove. Well-built modern hut. |
Upper Travers Where: Travers Valley, Nelson Lakes National Park Description: DOC (14) Access: 3 hours from John Tait Hut, 6-9 hours from the West Sabine Hut (across Travers Saddle). Comments: Tremendous setting in the tussock at the bushline (1300m). An old hut has been extended by adding a new room - stove in the old section, running water and sink in the other half. Hang your food up - there are mice. Good spot for kea watching. |
