Central Cebu National Park

Few people, even in Cebu, know that this park exists. Practically all of the forest that once covered Cebu's central range have been removed by loggers or slash-and-burn farmers. What's left are a few remnants and second growth vegetation. The destruction of the forest cover has driven at least two bird species, the Black Shama and the Cebu Flowerpecker to near extiction. The original park boundaries were set in 1937 and currently encompass 11,894 ha.

The area was brought to national attention in 1957. Then president, Ramon Magsaysay, was tragically killed when his plane crashed into a mountain within the park boundary. Each year in March, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, with the Tourism Authority, sponsors a climb to the crash site on Mt. Manunggal in memory of the president.
