PACK 916

1996-1997

The SCORPIONS DEN is one of two 1st year WEBELOS dens in Pack 916 (the other is the Sharks). For their first 2 years of Cub Scouting, this den was known as Den 3. Marcia Nelson and Lynn Welsh did a great job of leading the boys through their Wolf and Bear years. Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Welsh decided to "hand off" to the dads for the WEBELOS years. The new leaders are Bruce Nelson and Ed Thomas. We also have lots of help from all of our scout's parent's.

The Scorpions have all earned their Forester, Scientist, Fitness and Communicator and Showman badges. Several of the scouts have also earned their Outdoorsman badges after accompanying Troop 916 on a Camping trip to St Mary's, PA last summer.

The Scorpions visited Prime Sports Radio, WIXZ 1360 in East McKeesport, PA in early December, 1996, to complete one of the Communicator requirements. Thanks to Sean Carroll at Prime Sports Radio for arranging the visit!All of the Scorpions earned their WEBELOS badges in January and were presented with the badges at the Blue and Gold Banquet in February. The Scorpions also earned their Showman badges by completing the puppetry requirements. The scouts all had a great time building their marionettes, writing skits, painting scenery and performing their show at the Blue and Gold. Anyone who is interested in the construction details of our marionettes should contact the Scorpions den leader (also Cubmaster) Bruce Nelson.

We visited the White Oak Borough Council meeting on March 17, the boys completed the Citizen's badge in March. Before we took a break for the summer, the boys all earned their Readyman badges. EMT Ken Obusek, from the White Oak EMS presented a fine first aid program for our scouts. .

The Scorpions visited Laurel Caverns, near Uniontown, PA, in July to work on the Geologist badge. The boys received an interesting lecture, went on a hike to observe many geological formations, then toured the Caverns. We camped one night with Troop 916, at the Laurel Caverns Campground (scout groups only).

So far in the fall of 1997, we havecompleted the Aquanaut badge and have done some work on the Artist badge.
