REFLECTIONS OF MY SON It seems like just yesterday that I was preparing to graduate from high school. And just like yesterday, I feel some of the same concerns and emotions now that I did then. I wondered what did my future hold for me as I wonder what your future will be like. I wish I had your confidence, carefree attitude, and ambitious plans when I was your age. You have made the transition during this time of your life much easier for me with your sense of responsibility which astounds me at times. I've even said that at times you are too responsible. Remember my unnatural concern and the tears I shed when you got your driver's license? If only I had known then that you would always call if you would not be home at curfew, that you agreed drinking alcohol was a privilege you weren't allowed at your age, and that you would show the proper respect to the law enforcement officers and other drivers, it would have saved me a lot of tears. Son, I once heard someone say "the sweetest sound a mother hears is the sound of her teenage son's car pulling into the driveway." Believe me it is.
While writing this I've had reflections of memories of times when you were young. Memories of Babber which was your word for tractor and the name you gave your first puppy. Memories of the first fish you caught one hot August day and carried around in your little hand for hours to show anyone who would look. Memories of a big brother showing a little sister how to ride a bicycle and protecting her at the bus stop and during her Freshman year to Jefferson City High School. Memories of all your performances. I only hope the pride in my heart showed as well on my face. Memories of your first, second, and third car. Memories of your prom and you, so handsome, in your tuxedo. Memories of you and Mitch. Your friendship with him is to be cherished.
Writing this has also brought to mind the things I admire so much about you. I admire you for the closeness you have with Gina. As much as she loves to be a major pest at times, she knows that if she ever needs you, you'll probably be there before she even calls. I admire you for your outgoing and friendly personality. I admire you for the fact that you respect authority but have never been intimidated by it. I admire you for the respect and love you have always shown me. I admire your sense of humor, your laugh, and your love for animals. And most of all, I admire the closeness we share with each other.
Now that you are graduating, don't feel like you have to become a responsible adult overnight. You are already there. Always remember that no matter what, no matter how big or small the problem may seem, I am and will always be right here for you.
Ronnie, you are one of my two greatest achievements in life. If everything else I do in this life turns out half as well as you did, I couldn't possibly want for more.
Love,
Mom
