Central Coast (NSW)

The Central Coast of New South Wales is located about an hour and a half north of Sydney and extends from the Hawkesbury River north to about Newcastle.

The region is composed primarily of the same sandstone as that found in the Blue Mountains and in Sydney, so forms many of the same features as those two areas. Unfortunately the rock seems to be slightly softer than the rock in Sydney (and significantly softer than that in the Blue Mountains), and in many places has more shale bands than either of these areas as well. As a result, although there is a huge amount of visible rock (particularly along the Hawkesbury and its tributaries), much of it is unclimbable choss.

On the positive side, because of the sheer volume of exposed rock, there are a number of established crags scattered about the place, and lots of potential for more (particularly along the Hawkesbury).

Blackwall Mountain
Bouddi National Park
Joll's Bridge
Phegan's Bay
Ward's Hill Wondabyne (Mainline)
