New England Tablelands (NSW)

The New England Tableland is located in northern NSW, and is a large plateau that makes up part of the Great Dividing Range. At its highest point, the tableland reaches almost 1600m in height, so snow is relatively common in winter.

The plateau is predominantly granite, although to the east there is softer rock where a number of rivers have cut gorges into the plateau (these gorges, while deep, tend to consist of friable rock that is unsuitable for climbing). There is also at least one basalt outcrop where climbs have been established.

At its southern end (around Moonbi Gap), there are a number of huge granite slabs (100m+ in height), although these tend to be quite low angled.
