The Grotto (Nowra)
The Grotto is one of three crags located on the north side of the Shoalhaven River, within the town of Nowra. The rock at Nowra is sandstone, but quite different to the soft sandstone that characterises Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Nowra sandstone is considerably harder, contains a lot more conglomerate material (embedded pebbles etc.) and is less prone to forming chossy caves.
The guide for the area is the "Rockclimber's Guide to Nowra & Wollongong". There is also a "Rock" magazine update available, which is well worth getting.
Eat My Spinning Blades of Steel, Motherfucker 9m 20
Tackles some of the chossiest rock imaginable, yet is surprisingly solid to climb on (if a little sandy).
Jail Bait 8m 18 (originally graded 15)
Some weird moves make this one truly unpleasant. 3 rings bolts to U bolt anchor.
Depleted Gonad Circumference 20m 18 (upgraded from 16)
An excellent, steep and exposed jug haul with one hard, reachy move high up on the route. Take about 12 draws for ring bolts and fixed hangers.
