The Forty-Year Evolution of Math Tests
1960's Test: (old arithmetic)
"A logger cuts and sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is four-fifths of that amount. What is his absolute profit and what is his percentage profit?
1970's Test: (new math)
"A logger exchanges a set (L) of lumber for a Set (M) of money. The cardinality of Set M is
100. The Set (C) of production cost contains 20 fewer elements than the Set M. What is the
cardinality of the Set (P) of profits? Whatis the ratio of the number of elements in
Set (P) to the number of elements in Set (C)?"
1980's Test: (dumbed-down math)
"A logger cuts and sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost is $80 and his profit is $20. Can you find and circle the number 20?"
90's Test: (enlightened, "I feel your pain", math)
"A white, Eurocentric, Protestant, ego-maniacal, male logger, totally insensitive to the Spirit
of the Mother Earth, wastes $100 to senselessly, recklessly, and wantonly rape the land he has
been entrusted with temporally by Nature, destroying a beautiful stand of trees, the natural atmospheric "lungs" of the planet Earth which Evolution has graciously provided person-kind
for survival. This senseless and reckless act of violence yielded a measly and tawdry $20 in the
male-dominated, greed-driven, self-centered, perverse, capitalistic, economic monster conceived, developed, and promoted shamelessly and openly throughout the Western world. IF AND ONLY IF YOU CHOOSE, write an essay describing how you feel in hearing this story of rampant violence against Nature and utter disregard for Mother Earth and Her totally innocent and vulnerable dependents such as birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and other warm and cuddly creatures deprived forever of their natural, harmonic, perfectly-balanced environment and cruelly violated and abused in their own homes and directly in front of their immediate families and friends. This essay could address how alternate lifestyles such as Homosexuality, Beastiality, Sadism, and Masochism could provide the positive, supportive, and nonjudgmental educational environment and social and cultural influences resulting in a new world system devoid of greed, slothfulness, gluttony, and other undesirable traits of person-kind.
