Exceptions and Exemptions A. The following recreational fishermen and hunters are not required to obtain a basic recreational fishing license, saltwater license, Marine Conservation Stamp, basic hunting license, bowhunter license, big game license or migratory waterfowl conservation stamp, but must have proof of age in their possession whenever fishing or hunting: 1. Residents 60 years of age or older. B. The following recreational fishermen and hunters, upon identification and proof of eligibility satisfactory to the Department, shall be issued a basic recreational fishing license, saltwater license, Marine Conservation Stamp, basic hunting license, bowhunting license and big game license without payment of any fees: 1. A resident who is a VETERAN of the armed forces or Louisiana National
Guard, having a permanent SERVICE CONNECTED disability classification of
50 percent or more. Must submit form signed by parish service officer. C. Persons in the armed forces of the United States on active military duty and their resident dependents shall for licensing purposes, be given resident privileges. D. No person born on or after Sept. 1, 1969, shall hunt with a firearm unless that person has first been issued a certificate of satisfactory completion of a firearm and hunter education course taught or approved by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. However, a person younger than 16 years of age may hunt without such certificate if he is accompanied by and is under the direct supervision of a person 18 years of age or older. E. Any citizen of this state on active duty in the armed forces of the United States and who is assigned to an active duty post located outside the state of Louisiana shall not be required to obtain a license or pay a fee to hunt and fish while visiting in the state, provided that he has in his possession proper written evidence that his absence from his active duty assignment is authorized. This includes all non-commercial hunting and fishing licenses and recreational gear licenses. ![]() Recreational Fishing LicensesAll basic sports fishing licenses and recreational gear licenses expire on June 30 each year. Title 56, Section 302.1.C.(1) requires that all recreational anglers fishing south of the "saltwater line" for saltwater species have in their possession a Louisiana saltwater angler's license IN ADDITION TO a basic Louisiana fishing license EXCEPT those persons exempted from purchasing a regular Louisiana fishing license.
