Welcome to Steve's Garden homepage. I am an avid gardener and have been gardening for ten years. I have spent
hours planning and planting. If you are planning to start gardening
there a few things that you should keep in mind.
Getting Started
It is important to do some planning.The best time to plan is during
those cold winter months. Read some magazines and a few good books on gardening
and landscaping and you will begin to get an idea of what you want for
your garden. Planning is important because landscaping your home can be expensive
and will require a considerable amount of your time. In other words you want to get
it right the first time. Even if you can't afford to landscape your entire property
it is still a good idea to plan ahead. For example I set out a four year plan
to landscape my home. That gave me time to do a little research but above all
to put aside money to get the job done.
Get Your Plans on Paper
I can't stress how important it is to get your plans on paper. Some magazines
and books even have the symbols for the various plants and flowers so that you
can get an idea of how to lay out your landscape. Personally I prefer to use some
of the commercially available landscaping programs. A good landscape program
allows you to see what your landscape will look like when
it is finished. If this seems like just too
much work you can also consider hiring someone to draw up a plan for you. Prices
for this type of service can vary drastically depending on the person's qualifications
and experience.
Get Planting
Once the planning is finished the real joy comes from filling in your landscape
with your favourite flowers, shrubs, and trees. If you have done your "homework"
you will know what plants will thrive in your garden. If you are not sure what
to plant where, local nurseries and garden centres usually have knowledgeable
staff who can help you with your plant selection. You can also check out this
