A True Fishing Story - by Steve E.

I just had to share this TRUE FISH STORY with you. How do know when you have a true sport fisherman or in this case fisherwoman?

I wanted to make a trip to Lake Oroville Sunday to do a little pre-fishing for the up coming club event. It was such a nice weekend and my wife ask to go since she hadn't be out in awhile. We made a nice lunch and proceeding to leave the house around 6:00 for a 1 1/2 hour drive to Oroville. YES, she even got up early to leave. The lake was like glass, so I said let's go up the river arm about a 10 min. ride. We were both having some fun as we each caught a fish early. As you all are very much aware, bass boats are designed for two people. My wife wanted to fish next to me. As she put it, she didn't want to be back seated. She even has the fishing lingo down.

At around 9:30 I wanted to fish some crank baits. I found some nice fish suspended in around 10-15ft of water. As intense as I sometimes get I reached over to pick up one of my large crank baits rods and proceeded to cast and I caught something large. UNFORTUNATELY the yell and cry was not that of a fish. I planted my large crank bait in my wife's right ear. My instant reaction was cutting the line and throwing everything in reach to the bottom of the boat. There was no blood so that was MAYBE a good sign. However, The rear treble hook was COMPLETELY through the ear on two barbs and the third was planted in her face. It was Surprising she was handling things this well.

I started that boat up in less than a second and was FULL throttle back to the boat ramp passing other club members fishing that day as if I was crazy. All the way back I was VERY made at myself for doing such a stupid thing and hoping she is going to be fine. I also realized I might have lost my BEST fishing partner for good. As I was approaching the five mile hour markers, I was trying to decide how I was going to get the boat on the trailer without prolonging her discomfort any longer. By the way I paid not attention to the five mile markers. I believe I never got the boat on the trailer in such record time.

I was probably driving unsafe to the emergency room but I new she was hurting. She said her ear was fine not to drive unsafe. Once we got to the hospital all she said was how embarrassing it was. I WAS THE ONE WHO WAS embarrassed. The doctor gave her three shots to the face and ear to numb it and he cut the barbs with the two hooks in the ear and pulled it through the other way. The one in the face concerned me put he just pulled it out like he was unhooking a fish.

The moral to this story was after we left the hospital it was about 11:00 O'clock and my wife said she was feeling fine. She said it was such a nice day and asked me if we wanted to go back out and fish some more. I don't know what was more shocking, hooking her in the ear or her wanting to go back out after all of what happen. NOW that is a true fisherwomen!! I still feel bad of what happen and the lesson to learn is always use the bass boat the way it was designed or if your wife doesn't want to get back seated to let her have the front of the boat.
