FORT DESERET,
UTAH: This fort is located
about 2 miles south of the town of Deseret, in central western Utah, in
the desert. (Millard County) It is quite large (hundreds of feet square).
It has walls, 7 feet high & about 4 ft thick at the base, and 1 ft thick at
the top, made of mud & straw mixed together. On th NE & SW corners of the
fort rooms were built which extended out beyond the walls, so that the
outside of all 4 walls can be seen throught the gun ports in the rooms.
The fort was built in the 1800s by pioneer settlers for defense
against Indian (Native American) attacks. In the middle of the front
wall is an opening, where the main door was. There was one in the back
(west)wall, too, which was large enough for wagons to go through.
Part of the back & side walls have been torn down, through the many years
the fort has been there. Some local citizens got some people together
and mixed some mud & straw, and rebuilt some of the walls. There is s
monument in front of the fort, which tells some other interesting facts
about it.
There are no guides there, so you are on your own to look around and see
what it is like. Sage brush & grease wood brush & weeds are growing inside the
fort.
More information can be obtained at the museum in Delta, Utah, about 9
miles NE of the fort. If you are interested in old forts, this is one
you definitely should visit!
