Largest Island in Fresh Water

Manitoulin Island is a continuation of the Niagara Escarpment. It is also the largest island in fresh water (Lake Huron) in the world. It even has many lakes within it including a lake which itself contains an island.

Manitoulin Island can be reached via the ferry from Tobermory on the Bruce peninsula or over the bridge from the North Channel near Espanola.

The Cup and Saucer trail features fantastic lookouts from the edge of the escarpment. Cup and Saucer

There is a very nice beach at Providence Bay.

The Mississagi Lighthouse, near Meldrum Bay, is a bit out of the way but we found it worth the detour.

Larger Lakes

Some areas of the island have been scraped bare by glaciers. In valleys, sediment deposits allow farming.
