"So while the Methodists understood the Flatheads and Nez Perces to be yearning for the heritages of Moses, Christ, and St. Paul, they in fact wanted the heritages of Isaac Newton, Robert Fulton, and Eli Whitney."

GIVE YOUR HEART TO THE HAWKS

--Winfred Blevins--

In 1834, Jason Lee, was sent by the Methodist heirarchy in answer to a delegation from the Flathead and Nez Perce Tribes requesting that someone be sent to teach them of the white religon. Lee was so appalled by the events upon arriving at rondezvous that he continued west and finally settled in Oregon. The religious leaders of the east would not let the savages plea for Christ be ignored, they would send others to follow in Lee's path. This was a tragic error and a misunderstanding, created through misleading information and misinterpretation.

The early trapper spoke to and of the Indian in Indian terms. They talked of the shaman and healer using the French word "medecin" which means doctor. They also saw and spoke of the spiritual aspects of their lives using the same term, "medecin" meaning that any unexplainable power took on a mystic aura, or was magical. Any mysterious element was seen as holy or sacred and bestowed upon individuals by the Great Spirit or a Spiritual Guardian. The religious aspects of the Indian were totally encompassing in their daily lives, routines, and habits. This spiritual expression of the term "medecin" as spoken of and believed in by many of the early trappers was further misunderstood by those representatives of the tribes requesting religious teachers.

For the White Man to be able to create the marvelous things brought to the mountains every year by the traders at rondezvous their power must be the result of a great religion, was this religion not written down in a book the White Man called, "holy?" Where else did things of a "holy" nature come from but God or the Great Spirit? If there is a "holy" book perhaps teachers could be sent to provide instruction on it's use. The Indians wanted this mysterious power. The misunderstanding was further compounded and misinterpreted by the religious leaders in the east who allowed themselves to be misinformed as to the Indian's wants and needs. Instead of the missionaries they got, the Indians would have been better served through an industrial education which was their true desire. It was a matter of "knowing which way the stick floats."
