For the purpose of the exercise the forest is divided into coloured sectors. Each sector has up to seven incidents within that area. Incidents are marked on a map using six figure grid references. Using a compass and navigational skills the group will arrive at an incident which has been designed to test the mental and practical agility of the team. Points are awarded to the team, judged on their performance. At each incident points will be awarded as follows:-
Further points can be earned for attempting the incidents in the right order, and provision is made for teams to earn additional bonus points. Once all the incidents in that sector have been attempted the team then checks out of the sector and moves into the next coloured sector to attempt the next set of incidents. On completion of that sector the team then moves into the next sector and so on. Each team is allocated eight hours to complete the event. Although Shadow is run as a fun competition, the team with the highest score wins, the most important aspects of the competition are the taking part, pitting oneself against the elements and testing your abilities to deal with unusual situations as part of a team. The exercise one of the country's most exciting, is fully covered by a radio rescue safety network with first-aid backup and the provision of hot food for each entrant at the completion of the exercise. .
