Putting the OUT in ScOUTing
BDUTroop likes to get OUTDOORS.
- We camp at least 3 times, each year; in the Fall, Winter and Spring;
- We live and meet in a rural setting, with large treed parks;
- We enjoy the privilege of six aluminum canoes, with free storage and access to the river, at the local Yacht Club;
- We have the use of a one-room log cabin on the grounds of the McGill Arboretum; and
- There is an Ecomuseum only a short bike ride from the cabin.
Here are some of the ways in which we have interpreted the Scouting Program OUTDOORS, so far:
Providing Service and Support to our Community
BDUTroop has a long tradition of providing service and support in our community, often in partnership with the adult Scouters and the youth members of the Beaver and Cub sections as well as the local Guiding program adults and youth.
- Each season, one or two of our seasoned Scouts are invested as Kim to the Mohawk Cub pack, participating in most of the meetings and Camps, assisting the adult leadership team in planning and delivering their program.
- Each November, we team up to support the Corpus Christi parish Food Drive; collecting non-perishable foodstuffs for Christmas Baskets;
- In times of natural disasters, like the ice storm of '98, we help where we are needed, such as serving in the local relief shelter, or helping to clear debris;
- In the spring, we have supported the local Civitan Club in building and delivering Easter Baskets;
- We help with crowd-control at the annual Kub Kar Rally in the Beaconsfield shopping center;
- We provide willing "muscles" and "smiles" to support our Group Comittee's fundraising events, like the annual Home and Garden Product Sale, Hot Dog sales, and (new in '98) firewood sales; and
- We provide an exciting and challenging Scouting program, for the community youth.
Exploring and Experimenting with Technology
Science, Computers, Modelling, Building, Engineering - technology is a significant element of our modern world. BDUTroop has found some fun ways to integrate our exploration of technology into our Scouting Program:
- Each Spring, we design, build, customize and race model trucks (built from the Scoutruck models sold at the Scout Shop).
- Some of our youth members (usually those in High School) develop Science projects to participate in their school Science Fair.
- This website was originally conceived as a project which combined the elements of Communicator, Artist and Computers, amongst others.
- We have access to a wide variety of old computer "bones", as well as working models, experienced adult volunteers and a parent volunteer who controls the local college computer lab.
- We also have some lofty ambitions, for '98, to begin designing and building a camping trailer ("Chuck Wagon"-style), such as those we have been admiring at the annual Tri-District Camporees. Who knows?...
