Tuesday August 21st. Pouring foundations. John, Dave and Colin go for it!

Wednesday August 22nd. The first block!
The gazebo in the background was invaluable protection from the sun until the wind finally got it in week 5.

Wednesday August 22nd. Early footings on front wall, from upstairs.

Thursday August 23rd. Ugandan mixing technique in action. This involves dry mixing a massive pile of concrete mix as a team, then adding water to a portion at a time, all on location.

Friday Aug 24th. Nakumatt superstore. Muzungo paradise. Everything from hard hats to Mars bars - and cyber-cafe!

Friday Aug 24th. Shanty town area on east Nairobi, near Njiru.
On Sunday a few of the Kenyans from the church took the UK workers to see a group of the street children in central Nairobi. The place was virtually a tip - among comfortable parts of the city. Various aspects of the visit made it a heart-rending experience.

Sunday Aug 26th. Meeting some of the street kids in Nairobi.

Sunday Aug 26th. Their meals may consist of chicken heads and tomatoes, cast-offs from a nearby hotel. This is the kitchen and "bedroom".

Sunday Aug 26th. Shelter under the floor of a hospital is necessary when it rains.

Monday Aug 27th. Colin watches Phil laying some early footings. Blocks had to be bought from a distant quarry at Thika to get enough uniformity of size to lay straight-ish walls.
