I am a volunteer Firearms Safety Instructor for Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources. I have been teaching these classes since 1987. In addition, I am a NRA certified Rifle, Pistol, and Home Firearm Safety instructor.
I have also attended every Advanced Hunter Education class that has been held in my little corner of the state. Everytime I teach or attend a class, I learn some thing new. I highly encourage every hunter or beginning hunter to attend such classes.
1) Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun.
2) Watch that muzzle! Be sure you can control the direction the muzzle is pointed even if you should stumble.
3) Make sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions. Carry ammunition only for the gun you are carrying.
4) Be sure of your target and what is beyond.
5) Unload guns when not in use. Take down (disassemble) or have the action open. Guns should be carried in a case to the shooting area.
6) Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Never point a firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot.
7) Never climb a fence or tree, or jump a ditch with a loaded gun. Never pull a gun toward you by the muzzle.
8) Never shoot at a hard flat surface or water. Make sure you have a adequate backstop when you target practice.
9) Store guns and ammunition separately beyond the reach of children and careless adults.
10) Avoid alcoholic beverages before and during shooting. Use caution
when taking prescription and non-prescription medications - medications
can affect your motor skills in the same manner that alcohol can.
