CANONDOLA |
Canondola is a term formed by Canoe and venetian Gondola.
The idea was born in 1994, in occasion of a long trip on the river Donau (TID, Tour International Donau), from Austria to the Black Sea, to improve long distance paddling.
The system permits to change paddling position and to use the weight of the whole body.
A special rowlock is needed, called "forcola" at Venice, open to take the row easily away in narrow canals.
The same row is also special, asymmetrical in shape.
The rowing stoke, "voga alla veneta", is quite tricky, difficult to learn by oneself: it is a kind of sweep stroke with a return in water to correct the direction of the boat.
Learning the balance is very important: is is easier with a loaded and heavy boat.
It works only on flat water.
The long row can even be used as a pole.
