BASIC CHRONOLOGY
FRENCH PERIOD
- 1534 Cartier explores st.Lawrence river's bay and arrives up to Montreal
zone (Lachine rapids).
- 1603 Champlain goes inside the territory, with Hurons and Algonquins as
allies, fighting with the Hiroquois.
- 1611 Hudson discovers Hudson's bay.
- 1613 He reaches the Ottawa zone.
- 1615 He arrives at Lake Huron.
- 1630 Courreurs de bois begin the beaver fur trade.
- 1658 Radissons and De Grosseliers continue the explorations.
- 1660 Trois Rivières is an organized building place for canoes.
- 1670 Iroquois and English defeat the Hollanders.
- 1682 La Salle runs the Missisippi and creats the Louisiana (in honor of
Louis XIV).
- 1700 The fur trade is established with Canots du Maitre (12 mt) for the
section Montréal-Grand Portage and the Canots du Nord (6 mt) for the section
Saskatchewan-Grand Portage. All birchbark canoes.
- 1740 Pierre Gautier de Varennes reaches the Winnipeg lake.
- 1748 He goes up the Saskatchewan river.
ENGLISH PERIOD
- 1760 Defeat of Montreal.
- 1761 Alexander Henry reorganizes the fur trade with english leadership.
- 1763 Trety of Paris: Canada goes to the English.
- 1775 North West Company is born : cooperation between English and French.
Main base at Montreal and branch at Grand Portage.
- 1783 American Independence. Treaty of Versailles.
- 1789 Mackenzie arrives to the Artic sea running his river.
- 1793 Fraser, leaving from Athabasca lake, reaches the Pacific Ocean, on
his river.
- 1808 Fraser reaches the Pacific Ocean running the Columbia river.
- 1811 First stripper canoes in cedar tree.
- 1812 The branch of NWC goes to Fort William.
- 1820 Birchbark canoes are losing importance. First railroads. Immigrants.

- 1830 First regattas.
- 1846 Trety of Oregon. The border with USA is at the 49° parallel.
- 1850 Folding canoes in wood.
- 1867 Canada is born as a Confederation linked to the Commonwealth.
- 1870 End of the fur trade.
- 1870 Calvin Canvas Boat buids wood and canvas canoes.
- 1880 American Canoe Association,
for sailing-canoes regattas.
- 1880 Peterborough Canoe Company.
- 1887 Morris Canoe Company.
- 1890 Samples of canoes made of metal, paper and glue.
- 1899 Chestnut Canoe

- 1900 Canadian Canoe

- 1901 Old Town Canoe.
- 1920 Greatest diffusion of touring canoes. After that the Depression
comes.
- 1924 Many European Canoe Associations.
- 1936 Olimpic Games of Berlin, with canoes.

- 1946 International Canoe Federation.
- 1949 First slalom races. Marathons.
- 1970 Fiberglass canoes.
