It is not so difficult to self-make a paddle. You only need some gear and some skill in dealing with wood.
GEAR
Working bench with wooden vice to hold a paddle, axe, plane both electric and manual, crooked-knife, electric jig saw, chisels, lapping machine, finishing sand-paper.
Choice of wood: hard wood, like ash, spruce, maple, larch. You need a board 3,5 cm depth, at list five jears old. The lenght must be about 200 cm because you must discard the two edges, which in time willl crack. Width varies from 10 to 18 cm for narrow blades.
The blade is finished with marine varnish, the shaft with linen oil. Periodical maintenance is needed to keep water out of the wood.
