How to save a Salmon (and make money doing it)

How can you save a salmon? Go fishing! Thousands of anglers are saving salmon by catching pikeminnows, and they are getting paid for their catch. YOU can help by taking part in the BPA-funded pikeminnow sport-reward fishery, part of the Pikeminnow Management Program.
Pikeminnow eat millions of young salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and Snake rivers each year. Researchers believe reducing the number of these predators can greatly help the salmon and steelhead.
To that end, they're paying sport anglers $4-$8 for each pikeminnow caught in federal reservoirs in the lower Columbia and Snake rivers. This season, the tagged fish incentives will be $500 a tagged fish.
The idea is not to eliminate the pikeminnow, but to create a better balance between the numbers of pikeminnows and the numbers of salmon.

Results indicate that the program is successful. Since 1990 over 3 million pikeminnow have been removed from the Snake and Columbia rivers as a result of the sport reward fishery.
Millions of young salmon survived that would have otherwise been eaten. In 1999, more than 115,000 squawfish were caught.
The pikeminnow caught are not going to waste. They are used in liquid organic fertilizer for agriculture and fish meal for poultry and dairy cattle feed.

What is a Pikeminnow?

The pikeminnow, a native of the Columbia River system, is a large member of the minnow family. It has a long snout and large mouth. It is dusky green above and silvery-bronze below. It is similar in shape to the walleye, but a pikeminnow doesn't have the walleye's spiny dorsal fins and white-tipped tail fin. Unlike walleye, pikeminnow are native to the Columbia River system.
The pikeminnow is not the same as the threatened Colorado squawfish. They are two distinct species.

Why is the Bonneville Power Administration funding this program?

The 1980 Pacific Northwest Power Act directs the BPA to fund work to improve salmon runs harmed by federal hydroelectric dams. Development of the hydrosystem has made young salmon more vulnerable to predators, including pikeminnow, by slowing the flow of the river and concentrating young salmon at dams. In addition, young salmon pass dams through conduits around dam turbines, over spillways or through the turbines. This disorients and injures them, making them easy prey for pikeminnow.
Researchers believe reducing the numbers of pikeminnow is one of the best ways to reduce predation mortality.

The 2007 Season

The 2008 pikeminnow season for sport anglers begins on May 5, 2008 and lasts until September 28, 2008. Open waters include the mainstem lower Columbia River up to Priest Rapids Dam in Washington and the Snake River up to Hells Canyon Dam in idaho. Also open within this reach are backwaters, sloughs, and up to 122 meters (400 feet) into the tributaries on the Columbia and Snake rivers. (Check fishing regulations for your state.)
For every pikeminnow 9 inches or longer returned to a registration station, anglers will receive $4-$8. The more fish an angler catches, the more they are worth. The first 100 in one season are worth $4 each; The next 300 caught are worth $5, and after 400, they are worth $8 each. Special tagged pikeminnow will be worth $500 this year.

How to Participate

1. Obtain an appropriate fishing license.

Contact your local state fishery agency for information regarding fishing regulations and license requirement. (Oregon and Washington)

2. Register at the site.

Each angler MUST register in person at one of the registration stations each fishing day prior to fishing. Registration stations, operated by the Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife, will be open seven days a week from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Anglers may self-register at any time when registration stations are closed. Self-registration facilities are provided at all registration stations.

3. Go Fish

Fish in any of the designated areas of the Columbia and Snake rivers. Fish must be kept live, on ice, or in fresh condition. Fish that are frozen or that are not caught in accordance with program rules will not be accepted for payment.

4.Return to registration station

Turn in your catch in person at the station where you registered between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. If you catch and keep other species, they would like to collect information on those fish also.

5. Get and sign your voucher.

You will receive a reward voucher for $4-$8 for each eligible pikeminnow. There is no reward for fish shorter than 9 inches.

6. Take part in an interview

Technicians will ask you a few questions regarding your catch. This will help them evaluate the effectiveness of the program and determine ways to improve it.

7. Collect your reward

To collect your reward, place voucher(s) in an envelope and send to the address listed on the voucher. Make sure that all information on the voucher is correct and that you have signed the voucher. A check will be mailed within two to three weeks, provided the voucher is complete.
